Set types explained

Magic releases fall into several categories. Expansion sets are large numbered Standard-legal releases. Core sets are entry-level Standard-legal sets (currently called "Foundations"). Masters sets reprint older valuable cards. Commander products are precon-focused releases for the multiplayer singleton format. Universes Beyond products bring outside IP into Magic (Lord of the Rings, Marvel, Fallout, Stranger Things, Doctor Who, etc.). Secret Lair drops are limited-edition direct-to-consumer reprints.

Standard rotation and legality

Standard rotates roughly once per year. Sets remain Standard-legal for about three years from their release date. For current rotation status, see our complete formats guide.
